What is an ESOP?

For those who would like to learn more about Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), go to the website of The ESOP Association in Washington.

"An ESOP is an employee benefit plan which makes the employees of a company owners of stock in that company. Several features make ESOPs unique as compared to other employee benefit plans".

In Canada, we have a lot of cooperatives and labour funds, but I'm not sure if we have the (legally recognized) equivalent of the USA's ESOP... Anybody have more info?

There is an ESOP association in Canada. http://www.esop-canada.com/esop.html

My guess is that Canada's Federal legislation on ESOPs may not exist or doesn't exist with quite the comprehensiveness in which such legislation has been developed in USAmerica. It appears that the provinces, laboratories of democracy that are, have been leading in the writing of ESOP legislation.

Since the implementation of NAFTA, with its mixed blessings, American companies have gobbled up 10,000 Canadian SMEs. Federal ESOP legislation could probably have been designed to give owners and managers another alternative exit strategy over against an American buyout.

Thanks for the info, Alan. I wonder if all these people network together. I'll try contacting them.
