As a USAmerican I hate to say this...but Canada may be better off in the European Union. Some Canadians are already talking about this...and much of Latin America is already modeling their free trade areas after the EU model. Just as well...most of Latin America trades more with Europe than with the United States, and the Europeans are investing more in Latin America than the USA as well.
Or maybe Jeremy Rifkin's speculations about a "North American Union" made of Canada and "blue states" could come into being. (See the March issue of The Walrus) Which is more likely....Canada in the EU or the formation of an NAU? Both have a lot of merit.
