Larry Gambrone of Red Lion Press has graciously provided an interesting link to the New Mutualists of UK's Cooperative Party. From the Forward to this particular pamphlet, Prime minister Blair says :
"New Mutualism The Third Way
Foreword
I would like to welcome the publication of this pamphlet by the Co-operative Party as a valuable contribution to the debate about New Mutualism. In New Mutualism, Peter Kellner argues that the principles of mutualism can be applied to almost every decision that we take. Instead of seeking to establish the primacy of any particular ideology, his argument is concerned with finding ways of promoting mutualist outcomes.
The debate around the ‘Third Way’ is about achieving outcomes that truly benefit the many and not the few. It is about the development of ideas which break from the traditional public versus private battles.
New Mutualism expresses both the fundamental values of mutual and co-operative societies and seeks to find modern ways of expressing those values.
I look forward to the development of this debate with interest".
Kinda kool, eh? Is the New Mutualism a Big Way for the Third Way? Stay tuned....
Je comprend l'idée, mais je n'aime pas vraiment l'expression "troisième voie" : ce n'est pas clair. Ça peut dire tout ou rien. De plus, je veux insister que ce site n'est certainement pas en faveur du "blairisme".
Par Pierre Ducasse le 2005-04-08 15:35I have the same problems with it. I posted to my site as an example of the range of possible mutualist activity. At the time it was written I don't think Blairism had yet congealed into "neocon lite" and some of so-called New Labour were playing around with mutualist concepts, but were not serious about it. The Cooperative Party, on the other hand were serious and hoped to influence Labour. As we all know this did not happen.
Par Larry Gambone le 2005-04-09 00:14I've fixed the link. I apologise for not doing it right the first time!
It is sad to hear that the Cooperative Party is the co-opted party. I wonder what the Cooperative Party could do to be more of an influence on new Labour?
I'm not a big "third way" person myself, though I confess that I was delighted that Tony Blair would at least entertain the idea of mutualism.
I wonder if 9/11 was a factor in maintaining the marginalizaton of mutualism in Britain?
