Very much underreported in the mainstream press that I normally read is Hugo Chavez and his plans to build economic democracy in Venezuela and the rest of Latin America.
Here's a snapshot of what Chavez spoke of at the World Social Forum in January 2005.
"We have to re-invent socialism. It can’t be the kind of socialism that we saw in the Soviet Union, but it will emerge as we develop new systems that are built on cooperation, not competition"
Chavez spoke of Venezuela's path to a social economy. "It is impossible, within the framework of the capitalist system to solve the grave problems of poverty of the majority of the world’s population. We must transcend capitalism. But we cannot resort to state capitalism, which would be the same perversion of the Soviet Union. We must reclaim socialism as a thesis, a project and a path, but a new type of socialism, a humanist one, which puts humans and not machines or the state ahead of everything."
"We must reclaim socialism as a thesis, a project and a path, but a new type of socialism, a humanist one..."
And I'd like to see an economy based on cooperatives myself.
But competition and cooperation are not opposites. I'd also like to see some realms, currently governed by "cooperative" arrangements between large corporations and their pet government, opened up to a lot MORE competition.
Par Kevin Carson le 2005-07-18 23:10My understanding from reading excerpts of his comments before the WSF is that his model includes both competition and the continued operation of your plain vanilla capitalist firm. He is wanting to build a parallel social economy to take back the marketplace from the present capitalist establishment.
